The Experimental Theatre presents Naomi Iizuka’s adaptation of “Hamlet.” Shakespeare’s kingdom of Elsinore is relocated to the drug-ravaged, world of Oakland, Calif. in the late 1980s. Following an extreme act of violence, one man is confronted by sudden loss and must uphold the status of his community and his own corrupted lineage.
Izuka’s play captures the tensions within families and between territorialized, shattered communities - tensions that result from unbearable secrets, blood oaths, corrupted ideals, glorified notions of honor and sudden, mythic shifts in power. Catch this remarkable production March 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m. and March 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. at the Experimental Theatre.
