Starts:03:30 PM, February 5
End Date:03:30 PM, February 5
Location: Arts & Letters 379
SDSU's Center for Latin American Studies is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a recipient of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. FLAS fellowships are extremely competitive and are available to MA students in any discipline. Graduate students must be enrolled in a MA or PhD program combining at least one language course per semester with some aspect of area studies of Latin America. For example, specific courses in your area of study including combinations such as public health in Baja California and advanced Spanish, or education in Mexico and Mixtec studies are eligible. Each scholarship student will receive $15,000 for living expenses during the academic year 2009-2010, as well as payment of all fees for classes taken at San Diego State University. Preferences will be given to students studying a language other than Spanish (e.g., Portuguese, Mixtec, Nahuatl, etc.), but advanced levels of Spanish will be considered.

In addition to academic year awards, the FLAS program also provides fellowships for intensive language instruction during the summer. Students who apply for SDSU's Center for Latin American Studies' Mixtec or Zapotec Summer programs will be considered.

Each program costs $4,000. This includes all language instruction and 4 units of language credit from SDSU. FLAS fellowships cover the program cost and provide an additional $2,500 to cover living expenses. FLAS recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents. Other language programs that teach languages of Latin America, other than Spanish, will be considered pending funding.
